Starting Back Up

It’s been a long time since I have blogged.  It’s time that has changed.

The NBA Season is in full swing and the NFL Season is coming to a close.  Last I wrote NBA hadn’t even begun and NFL was only four weeks in.  To open this blog back up, I’m going to lay out what I believe the final NFL seedings will look like come week 16.  Enjoy.

NFC:
1.  New York Giants
If you didn’t see this coming, you clearly never watch football.  The Giants recently demolished the best run defense in the league and have only one loss at this point in the season (to my Browns, I might gloat).  They are the best team in the NFC and in my opinion the best in the entire league.  Number one seed for sure.
2.  Carolina Panthers
This team is quietly the number two seed in the NFC, and have a very modest schedule from here on out, their biggest game being a Monday night game at home against division rival Tampa Bay.
3.  Arizona Cardinals
I’m ranking them third not because I think they will have the third best record, but because there is no doubt they will win their division and will almost certainly have a better record than the winner of the NFC North.  This isn’t to take away from their power packed offense or MVP Kurt Warner; this is a good team nobody wants to play at home.
4.  Green Bay Packers
The way the playoff seeding works is the four division leaders are the top four seeds.  The Packers will have the worst record of NFC playoff teams.  In fact, there may be an NFC East team with a better record that does not make the playoffs.  However, the Packers are in.  Bad news to the Bears and Vikings.
5.  Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys had a big win over Washington on Sunday and that momentum will carry them through the rest of the season.  This team is far too talented to not make the playoffs, and they could be this years Giants.
6.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Their schedule is kind and they’re playing well anyways.  A crucial MNF game against the Panthers will help decide if they get the six seed or two seed.

AFC
1.  Tennessee Titans
This is obvious.  They are three games ahead of their closest contendor.  Don’t let this placement allow you to think they are my Super Bowl Pick.  They’re not.  I do not believe they will go undefeated and I do not believe they will get to the super bowl.  They are good however and will have home field advantage.
2.  Pittsburgh Steelers
I like Baltimore and I think they there is a chance they could make the playoffs.  They will not get ahead of the Steelers though.  The AFC North crown (sadly) belongs to them yet again.
3.  New York Jets
Originally I was going to give this spot to the Patriots, but after comparing the two teams schedule, there is no reason for the Jets to not maintain their pace to win the division.  Most games are at home against <.500 teams.
4.  Denver Broncos
Simply put, the AFC West is a bad division.  Denver is on top and will remain that way.  They will not get past the first round of the playoffs though.
5.  Indianapolis Colts
The ship is right.  Peyton is Peyton.  Once Marvin Harrison starts playing like himself this team is going to be just as good as they always have been.  They are only fifth because they won’t get ahead of Tennessee.
6.  New England Patriots
Matt Cassell is for real; he proved that Thursay night.  They have a tough schedule (Pittsburgh, Arizona, and others) remaining.  They will win just enough to get into the playoffs and God-willing will play the Jets in the first round.  I cannot think of a more exciting game.

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: New England Patriots vs. Tennessee Titans
NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys

SUPER BOWL: Rematch.  New England Patriots vs. New York Giants

These are my predictions.  Nothing too earshattering here.  As far as the AFC North is concerned, I hope I’m wrong.  Here’s to an exciting end to the season!

A Suprising Start

Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans

Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans

Week Two of the NFL is about ten hours from being logged away and so far we have seen several surprises.  After two weeks here are the teams that are 2-0:

AFC:  New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans
NFC:  New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, and either Philadelphia Eagles or Dallas Cowboys (they play eachother tonight)

Some of these come as no surprise, such as Pittsburgh, New York, Dallas/Philly.  New England is more surprsing than it would have been due to the loss of Tom Brady, but given who they were playing they should be on this list.  Here are the surprsies:

Tennessee Titans:  Who would have thought they could go into Jacksonville and soundly beat them in week one?  Then as an encore they marched into lowly Cincinnati with no Vince Young and spanked them.  The Titans are leading the division.  The AFC South is no schlum division either, with all four teams being at .500 or higher last year and three of them making the playoffs.  Will they remain leaders for the rest of the season?  The answer is yes if they keep playing like this and Indianapolis continues to struggle, especially given their relatively easy schedule over the next five weeks.

Carolina Panthers: These guys are turning into Carolina’s own Kardiac Kids.  Two last minute comebacks against two teams that most thought would win.  Chicago is not as good as San Diego in my opinion and therefore not quite as impressive, but they are coming off of a solid win in Indianapolis.  This didn’t stop Carolina from staging a fourth quarter come back against them.  If they keep playing even close to this well expect to see them for more than 17 weeks; the NFC South doesn’t have too much competition.

Arizona Cardinals:  I’m reluctant to put them on this list because they should be 2-0.  They played the 49ers in week one and the Dolphins in week two who had no more than five combined wins last season.  I would like to point out, however, that the NFC West is so open that even I could compete in it.  The Rams are a joke, and the 49ers are not much better.  The Seahawks just lost to the 49ers and that should say enough about them.  What I’m trying to say is Arizona already clinched the division.

To close this blog I’d like to go and see how well I did with my predictions.  I actually did pretty bad, only accurately predicting 7/15 of the games thus played, though in my defense it was a fairly surprsing week.

Make sure to tune into tonights football game as we see the Cowboys play the Eagles.  Should be a good one!

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

After week on of the NFL season has come to a close, let’s take a look at who was good, who was bad, and who was really bad:

The Good

Dallas Cowboys:  Hands down the most talented team in the NFL, and with the addition of Adam Jones they only got better.  Though I was not thrilled, they shut down an explosive Browns offense, holding them to a measly ten points.  Marion Barber ran all over an improved defensive line (until he left the game) and Tony Romo looked like he was playing against the practice squad.  The passing game looked good, though its hard to judge when playing such a poor pass defense.  No doubt the team to beat in the NFC, and really the entire NFL.

Tennessee Titans:  The offense looked strong against a very physical Jacksonville team, particularly rushing.  The defense looked even stronger, putting forth seven sacks of Vinc Young and shutting down the running game, holding them to 31 total yards rushing.  Young left the game and is expected to be out two to four weeks, which will obviously hurt.  Good thing they got that division win early.

Pittsburgh Steelers:  As much as I hate to admit, the black and gold looked very strong as they destroyed a decent Houston Texan team.  Big Ben looked dominant, even more so did Willie Parker.  The defense looked pretty good overall, holding the Texans to 71 yard rushing, but giving up 202 yard through the air.  With Tom Brady sitting on the sideline, this is the team to beat in the AFC.

Philadelphia Eagles:  I’m hesitant to say that the Eagles did a great job on Sunday only because they played a team that ESPN recently ranked as the worst in the NFL (and rightfully so).  Regardless, they held the Rams to three points and did not give up a single third down conversion (which is impressively good for the Eagles and impressively bad for the Rams).  McNabb looked as strong as ever, throwing for 361 yards.  Brian Westbrook looked solid as well.  This may be the team closest to rivaling the Cowboys.

The Bad

New England Patriots:  What’s there to say?  The Pats lost Tom Brady and with it any hopes of returning to the Super Bowl.  They may still make the playoffs – their defense is solid, Maroni is a solid running back, and really Matt Cassel didn’t do all bad – 13/18 for 152 yards and one touchdown (zero interceptions) is decent, but nowhere near the level that should be expected when the Kansas City Chiefs come to Foxborough.  There is hope for the Patriots (largely due to a very weak division), but barely squeaking by the Chiefs at home is not a good start.

St. Louis Rams:  The Rams got spanked.  Big time.  And while it is true that they got spanked by one of the better teams in the NFL, it was by an absurd amount.  Only scoring three points isn’t near as pathetic as going 0/11 on third down conversions.  At least nobody expected them to be good…

The Ugly

The Detroit Lions:  The Detroit Lions should be ashamed of themselves right now.  They lost to the Atlanta Falcons.  I repeat – the Atlanta Falcons.  Rookie Quarterback.  New coach.  This team was supposed to be as bad as Miami was last year.  All this isn’t to downplay the Falcons.  They played a ballsy game.  The Lions have no excuse though.

Cincinnati Bengals:  This team should be so much better than they are.  Chad “Ochocinco” is one of the best wide receivers in the league. Carson Palmer is one of the best quarter backs in the league.  That combination alone should give them a chance to win more ballgames than they do.  This week they lost to the Baltimore Ravens.  The Ravens were one of the worst teams in the league last year (in fact they were the only team the lowly Dolphins beat).  Cincinnati should have been able to pull this one out, but just like in past seasons they are not living up to the talent level they have.
