Mediocre Monday Night

Tonight’s NFL regular season Monday night opener features a double header:  Vikings at Packers and Denver at Oakland.

The opening game between Minnesota and Green Bay should prove to be a very interesting game.

It is ironic that poor Aaron Rodgers has to open up his NFL career on the bright lights of Monday Night football, but I believe he will do an at least adequate job running the Packers offense.  It is not him that the real pressure is on anyways; it is the Green Bay managing staff.  If Aaron Rodgers leads the team through the season to the playoffs then they can let go a nice big sigh of relief.  If he fails to do so and bombs horribly (which I do not expect him to do) it will leave Packers fans (and the rest of sporting nation) questioning their decision to let Bret Favre go to the Jets.  These questions will only add up faster if New York has a successful run this season in a pathetic (and now Tom Brady-less) AFC East.

From the Viking’s end, fans love to watch Adrien Peterson.  The kid can explode anytime for a huge run and what’s not to love about that?  This mixed with the what should be an improved team from last season could (and will) give Green Bay a serious run for their money in a tight NFC North and thus making this an exciting division rivalry game.

This game should be a Monday Night game.

Denver verse Oakland on the other hand?  I would have to disagree.

This team features two teams whose hopes of making the playoffs are about as realistic as the Patriots getting back to the Super Bowl without Tom Brady.  Not happening.

Now I’m all for giving teams that don’t normally get a lot of limelight a chance at some.  But on opening night?  Kind of a pathetic way to open up the NFL season.  No offense to Oakland or Denver fans (well, ok, Denver fans are welcome to take offense).  This could be a good football game, but it just seems silly for ESPN to broadcast such a low excitement game.

Maybe I’m wrong though.  We’ll see tonight.
